The following interview with Rieko Matsuura is seen in a French Journal. "The Big Toe" is translted into French, but not into English.
-What exactly are readers supposed to understand?
- that we are all prisoners of an exclusively genital conception of
sexuality which is particularly impoverished and alienating. Women are
reduced to their vagina even though there are other forms of pleasure
waiting to be discovered. We have to learn to free ourselves from that
sexuality.
-The novel seems to make fun of so-called penis envy and, by extension,
phallic power in general.
-You could see it like that. But for me it's also a very kind and
compassionate way to suggest that men free themselves from the tyranny
of
their genitals.
